Our History 1895 - 1972

The International Meat Trade Association is one of the oldest meat industry associations in the UK.

1895IMTA 1915
IMTA's origins go back to 1895 when the UK was beginning to forge new meat trading links with Australia, New Zealand and South America. This was to satisfy the demand for meat for the growing UK population.
The predecessor of IMTA was formed as the Frozen Meat Trade Association.

1901
The association comprised 20 members, including Weddel, Towers, Sansinena, Bergl, the New Zealand Farmers Co-operative, and the shipping line Shaw Savil and Albion.
First version of the Trading Terms was drawn up to be universally used in the transaction of C.I.F. business.

1908
Appointment of Sir Gordon Campbell of Weddel as President of the Association who continued as President without any break in his appointment, until the year 1952.

1928
The Association became known as the Imported Meat Trade Association – first version of IMTA.

1943-1954
Towards the end of the War, there were a number of joint Committees set up to help the Ministry of Food to control the distribution of meat supplies. The Meat Importers Joint Committee, on which IMTA Members served, worked closely with the Ministry of Food right up to decontrol.

1972
UK's Accession to the European Economic Community. IMTA members, who at the time were all meat importers, found their traditional sources of supply being seriously restricted by levies and quotas.

1982 to Present

1982
Our name changed again to the International Meat Trade Association. The change was necessary to indicate that its members were now trading World-wide and covered exports as well as imports.

1995
IMTA joined the UECBV (European Livestock and Meat Trading Union) and together with other member state organisation we have established a strong import section of the association in order to increase our influence on EU policy.

1990s - 2000s
Since the mid-1990s changing EU policy, animal diseases, etc., have presented challenges for our members.Council
Members were actively involved in reducing the high level of beef intervention stocks and then had to find alternative supplies as these stocks dwindled.

Buoyant exports to non-EU countries were terminated overnight as bans were imposed on UK beef and today we still work towards re-opening markets. Such events meant that our members have had to be flexible and resourceful in order to survive.

Today we work towards making those in authority realise that the EU is in danger of lacking access to meat supplies. Trade policies put in place over the past 40 years are not all appropriate for today's global situation.
